Happy Thanksgiving From the Virgin Islands!

What is it like to have Thanksgiving in the Virgin Islands?

It is always fun to watch the news with all the Winter storms that effect the travel for this big holiday. More fun to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with everyone all bundled up as I am sweating getting the turkey stuffed!

Thanksgiving here is all the same, except for the warm weather. I got a 21 pound Butterball turkey for $1.79 a pound and all the fixings!

This year I am thankful to have my father down to the islands! I think it may be 35 years since the last time we have been together for Thanksgiving!

To start the week off, I took him fishing for Wahoo, but all we caught was this from the cooler.

Followed by dinner at the Yacht Club

A trip to Jost Van Dyke and Soggy Dollar Bar with a friend who had some of his friends here.

Thanksgiving breakfast of a omelette.

Turkey is now in the oven and we have our dear friend Adam coming over from St Johns.

The rest of the weekend consists of for Black Friday, the dogs first day on the new boat as Chukar has succesfully completed his heartworm treatment! Saturday will be our first trip to the Baths on Virgin Gorda and Sunday we will have to go to a sports bar since my father is a dumb Patriots fan and that dumb team is on at the same time as our terrible Jets.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! We are thankful that we get to live in Paradise!

Happy Friday

It is that time of the week again for Happy Friday! I am running out of things to write about on here, any suggestions would be appreciated?

We have been really busy with out of town guests.

We had Al and Tina from California stop by for a day on the Carnival Glory. We met Al and Tina almost ten years ago when we were all on a cruise through the Panama Canal and have kept in touch with them all these years. We took them to Magens Bay to the beach for the day with some Pizza at Island Time Pub in Red Hook.

Then it was off fishing and caught some Wahoo.

Then taking a friend from High School and her family and friends to Jost as they were here staying on St John.

And finally taking a group of friends over to Cane Garden Bay on Tortola and then Soggy Dollar.

And of course, we had another visitor come by, this tarantula.

Now we have guests in from where we used to live in Driggs, ID here for a few days, so it will have to be Jost tomorrow, fishing Saturday and watching the Jets beat Buffalo on Sunday.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone!

After an unsettled start to the week, the Summer heat and steam has finally broke! And it was one hell of a hot Summer this year. It feels like winter here again with temps in the mid -80s and lows in the mid 70's. The humid haze is also gone!

We had a good day fishing on the South Drop yesterday, bringing in 3 wahoo, one being 40 lbs.

It was nice to get some blood on the boat!

Today I am heading over to St John to pick up an old High School friend and her family for a day over at Jost. Sunday I am taking some friends out for a birthday cruise on Sunday!

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Time in the Virgin Islands?

Coming to visit the Virgin Islands? Wondering what time zone we are in?

This past Sunday, the rest of the US Mainland went from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time. That meant you moved your clocks back one hour.

Here in the Virgin Islands we are in the Atlantic Time Zone, which is technically one hour ahead of the US East Coast. We, however, do not participate in Daylight Savings Time, why? My guess is that since we are in the tropics and close to the equator, we experience pretty much 12 hours of daylight. June we will see sunrise around 5:00 AM and a sunset around 7:00 PM, and in December, 6:30 AM to about 5:30 PM. What is weird about this is that while the rest of the statesiders are enjoying daylight at 8 PM in July, we have already been dark for an hour.

Since we do not participate in DST, that means when stateside goes back to standard time, we become an hour ahead of the East Coast:

I call this "Island Time"

New York - 6PM   -  STT - 7PM  - one hour ahead
Chicago - 5PM      -   STT - 7PM -  two hours ahead
Denver - 4PM       -   STT - 7PM  - three hours ahead
San Francisco - 3PM - STT - 7PM - 4 hours ahead

And the rule when stateside has Daylight Savings Time = East Coast Time or subtract one hour from the table above.

What does this mean for us here in the Virgin Islands? This means any 10 PM shows or Monday Night Football or late night college football games are all without reach of watching. It also means getting up an hour earlier to catch that early morning flight (check your flight schedules if you have current reservations, there will likely be a schedule change). If you are on a cruise, be careful if they keep you on ship's time (Florida time), we will still be an hour ahead of you for your day here!

Speaking of which, I need to check my Dish TV DVR and make sure the time change was made in there too!

I hope this helps if you are coming here for a visit? My hope is that you will adjust to Island Time, where you are so relaxed, time doesn't matter?

Happy Friday!

Yes, I know it is Saturday, I forgot to post a Happy Friday!

With that being said, I think Halloween festivities here have finally come to end? There were parties last weekend, Thursday night (which is actually Halloween) and some last night.

We stuck to tradition and celebrated on Halloween! The dogs had fun!

We snuck out to Shenanigans Sports Bar to watch some football and have some fun! That is until the termites had a hatched and swarmed the bar! I ended winning the Halloween Contest, $50!

I finally got the name on the new boat!

Other than that, the Summer weather here has finally broke! It has been much cooler, with the trade winds back, only thing is it has been raining now for the last 3 days! But what a relief, I never thought that heat and humidity was going to end!

I leave you with this week's picture, from Point Pleasant Resort! Have a great weekend!
